Cats have a different way of showing affection and intimacy. However, a new situation or a place can be overwhelming for them, causing them to be shy. Understanding the root cause for such behaviour can help a pet owner to bring the shy cat out of its shell. Here are some ways to help your kitty.
Knowing the cat’s behaviour
Naturally wary creatures, cats are not only predators but also prey animals. This dual role makes them cautious especially when they are in an unfamiliar or new situation. Therefore, moving into a new space be it a home or a cat boarding can at first feel vulnerable, causing them to avoid any sort of interaction and feel shy (and even scared).
Also, like humans having distinct personality traits, cats have different traits too – some are curious and outgoing, others “aloof” or timid. It usually takes some amount of time to acclimatise to a new environment and build trust and confidence. Another very quintessential behaviour of cats is their territorial nature. Therefore, a new environment can make them feel threatened and it may take some time for them to be comfortable and expand their territory at their own pace.
So, what can you do?
Safe space-
Try to create a safe space where the cat can feel at home and comfortable. This can be a cozy corner in your room or a quiet box with a scratch pad in a secluded space. Creating safe zones for your cat can make them feel happy and secure.
Give some time-
Allow your cat to approach you instead of forcing yourself to build a camaraderie with your cat. Allow the cat to take it slow and feel at ease. Trying to pick the cat up can be a very hurried approach and hinder the bonding process. The best way to bond with your cat is to allow it to come to you and not overwhelm it with instant touching.
Use treats-
Another effective solution is to use food or treats as a form of positive reinforcement. Cat food can be a powerful motivator and can be associated with evoking a positive response from your furry friend. With time, your cat will gradually start to associate food with safety and be more approachable to you. Gradually, you can use treats to encourage her to explore new territories.
Clicker training-
For cats who are shy, clicker training can boost confidence and be healthy for their curiosity levels. With a click sound and reward, you can train your cat to associate the sound with positive behaviour, and thus, make the cat feel comfortable when you’re around. This will help your cat feel more in control of the situation rather than being overwhelmed by her surroundings.
In conclusion, patience is the key, and giving time to your cat is the best way possible. Create a safe environment, give your cats plenty of space and positive reinforcement to build a bond that you will cherish for a lifetime. Remember they will always trust you in the process at the end!
